The Montclair Public Library is hosting two, hour-long portrait workshops (back-to-back at 1 & 2 p.m.) to generate a new suite of portraits that will be displayed at Caldwell University and future venues. Part of “Out in the Open. In it Together,” an exhibit of 22 larger-than-life-sized portraits on view May 20-June 30. This inspirational exhibit is an Inside Out Project Group Action, part of the global participatory art project created by TED Prize winning artist JR. The display is locally organized by the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, Inc., and its community based committee is comprised of family members of people with mental illness, mental health consumers, clinicians, and artists. The message behind the portraits is one of hope and resilience.
What to expect: A brief, facilitated dialogue about stigma-busting through art, followed by individual portrait sessions with volunteer professional photographers. Participation is free and all ages are welcome! Parental permission is required for those under 18. Please register early, because space is limited. Expect to spend about 45 minutes.
